Washington is a town in Tyne and Wear, in the northeast England. It is 8 km/5 mi southeast of Newcastle upon Tyne, on the River Wear, and was designated a new town in 1964. The population in 2001 was 55,450. The industries in Washington and surrounding area, include electronics, car assembly, and the manufacture of textiles, chemicals, and electrical goods. Beamish Open-Air Museum is nearby to the west.
There is a Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust reserve nearby, established in 1975. Set in 45 hectares on the banks of the River Wear, its wildlife include exotic waterbirds, wild waders and lovely scenery.
In winter, hundreds of curlew fly in at dusk to roost alongside redshank. Bullfinches and great-spotted woodpeckers perch in Hawthorn Wood. Water birds display their feathers in courtship rituals.
Washington and Sunderland West will be a constituency represented in the House of Commons of the Parliament of the United Kingdom. It will elect one Member of Parliament (MP) by the first past the post system of election.
Following their review of parliamentary representation in Tyne and Wear, the Boundary Commission for England has created this new constituency. It is composed of elements of the following former constituencies: Houghton and Washington East; Gateshead East and Washington West; Sunderland North; and Sunderland South. It is provisionally ranked as the 28th safest Labour seat in the UK, and the 11th safest Labour seat in England.
